OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Virginia women's rowing team finished seventh of 21 teams at the Aramark South/Central Championships on Sunday. The defending champions also claimed second place in the South Region.

Fourth-ranked Ohio State claimed the South/Central overall championship and the Central Region championship. Host Tennessee captured the South Region championship.

UVa's varsity four, which included rowers Mary Eddy (coxswain), Yvonne Epp, Diane Leigh, Allison Brennan, and Bridget Wandelt, won its third consecutive race to win the event title in 7:22.00. Ohio State (7:26.95) was second, followed by Wisconsin (7:29.60), Michigan State (7:31.18), Minnesota (7:34.35), and Michigan (7:39.99).

"Kudos to the varsity four; good for them," Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. "As a team, it was a disappointing effort. It's been a tough year. Our NCAA bid is in serious jeopardy."

UVa's open four "A" boat of Sorelle Williams (coxswain), Megan Haughs, Victoria Moore, Schafer Bomstein, and Lindsey Fletcher finished first in the "C" final in 7:52.90. Indiana (7:57.09) was second, followed by Ohio State "B" (8:03.18), and North Carolina (8:32.21).

The open four "B" boat, manned by Taylor Gilmore (coxswain), Adrienne Egge, Lindsay Arnold, Sarah Blair, and Kirsten Graslie, finished fourth in the championship in 7:47.73. Ohio State (7:40.70) won the event, followed by Tennessee (7:44.34), and Wisconsin (7:45.45). Notre Dame (7:53.93) was fifth, and Notre Dame "B" (7:57.54) rounded out the field..

The novice eight finished fourth in 6:58.84, manned by Sara Peeling (coxswain), Jessica Streufert, Augusta Stratos, Vanessa Furman, Mariel Plagenhoef, Amanda Chase, Krista Weissbart, Mariana Lima, and Bianca Spinosa. Wisconsin (6:50.60) won the event, followed by Michigan (6"52.44), and Michigan State (6:55.28). Clemson (7:01.18) was fifth, and Indiana (7:02.4) was sixth.

The 15th-ranked first varsity eight of Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Ashley Jones, Melanie Kok, Andria Haneman, Kerry Maher, Bridget Fowler, Heather Gardner, Sara Lippa, and Libby McCann took third in the petite final in 6:39.17. Michigan Stat e(6:34.90) won the race, followed by Louisville (6:37.15). Duke (6:40.64) was fourth, followed by Central Florida (6:41.47) and Iowa (6:51.84).

UVa's second varsity eight of Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Chrissie Monaghan, Mindy Fiesler, Renee Albers, Katrin Sydlik, Mieke Pitts, Kelsie Chaudoin, Crystal MacLeod, and Anna Samaha finished sixth in its race in 6:44.35. Ohio State (6:34.20) won the event, followed by Wisconsin (6:36.17), Michigan Stat e(6:37.85), Michigan (6:39.04), and Notre Dame (6:42.21).

Virginia now awaits an invitation to the 2006 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The field of 12 teams will be announced on Tuesday, May 16.
