Duke Rowing Team Places Second At ACC Championship

The Duke rowing team competed in the fourth annual ACC Championships on Lake Monticello in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday, April 19. The Blue Devils finished second with a point total of 29. Virginia won the regatta with 40 points, while Clemson followed Duke with 21 points and North Carolina finished fourth with 10 points.

The regatta was set up in a dual race format, with the 1 and 4 seeds racing in heat 1 and the 2 and 3 seeds racing in heat 2. The winners went on to the grand final and the losers participated in the petitie final. With the exception of the novice eight, Duke was paired up with Virginia for the grand final.

The novice eight competed in the petite final and took 3rd over Carolina with a time of 7:11.7, while Carolina finished in 7:20.4. The varsity four finished second to Virginia in a time of 7:57.5. The second varsity eight finished in a time of 7:08.1 again finishing second to Virginia.

The #21 ranked varsity eight had the closest race of the day with #11 Virginia finishing in 6:55.2 while Virginia finished the course in 6:47.9.

Two Duke rowers, Joanna Hingle and Amelia Booth were named to the 2003 All-ACC team at the awards ceremony following the regatta. Joanna Hingle is a 2001 and 2002 All-ACC selection, a 2001 and 2002 All-South Region selection, and a 2001 and 2002 All-American selection. Hingle was also named a CRCA National Scholar Athlete in 2001 and 2002. She was a member of the varsity eight that finished sixth in the Central/Southern region last year and won the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic. Amelia Booth is a 2001 All-ACC Selection, and a 2001 and 2002 South Region selection. She was also a member of the the varsity eight that finished sixth in the Central/Southern region last year and won the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic.

The Blue Devils also collected one point in the Carlyle Cup, by finishing ahead of North Carolina. Duke currently leads the Carlyle Cup standings 22.5 to 15.5. Duke returns to action on Saturday, April 26 when they host Washington State on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, SC.
