CLEMSON, S.C. - The University of Virginia rowing team captured the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Title Saturday (April 17) on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, SC. The Cavaliers placed first in all four events winning the varsity four, novice eight, second varsity eight and varsity eight.

This was Virginia's fifth ACC Rowing Title in five years, as they finished today's regatta with 40 points. Duke finished second with 25 points, followed by Clemson (23) and North Carolina (11). Virginia has now won 19 of the 20 races in the five ACC Championships. Clemson (in 2001) is the only other school to win a race in the five years of the championship.

Virginia won the varsity four with a time of 7:45.1. Clemson finished second with a time of 7:50.8, followed by Duke (8:06.1) and North Carolina (8:24.7).

In the novice eight race, Virginia crossed the finish line first with a time of 7:11.2, while Clemson finished second completing the course in 7:13.9. North Carolina finished third in 7:25.9. Duke did not compete in this event.

Virginia placed first in the second varsity eight recording a time of 6:47.1. Duke came in second with a time of 6:56.7 with Clemson (6:58.6) and North Carolina (7:17.1) finishing third and fourth, respectively.

In the first varsity eight, the final race of the day, Virginia finished with a time of 6:34.3 followed by Duke with a time of 6:42.6. Clemson finished third with a time of 6:49.9 and North Carolina fourth clocking in at 6:57.0

The nine-member All-ACC team is comprised of Amanda Adam (Duke), Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer (Virginia), Mae Joyce Gay (Duke), Mary Nell Green (Clemson), Robin Mescher (Clemson), Jennifer Reck (Virginia), Lindsay Shoop (Virginia), Betty Shumaker (Virginia - coxswain) and Grace Wallenborn (North Carolina).

Cavalier head coach Kevin Sauer was named ACC Coach of the Year and Virginia's first varsity eight was named the ACC Crew of the Year. The Cavalier's first varsity eight is comprised of Betty Shumaker (coxswain), Jennifer Reck, Lindsay Shoop, Beth Clark, Kathryn Waller, Margaret Matia, Sara Lippa, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer and Melanie Kok.
