GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech junior forward Uju Ugoka and Georgia Tech freshman guard/forward Aaliyah Whiteside have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Ugoka shot 72.2 percent in her Hokie debut and scored 28 points to lead Virginia Tech past Wake Forest, 73-52, in both teams’ ACC opener. She set a Cassell Coliseum record for most points scored against an ACC opponent, and was one basket shy of tying the Coliseum record for field goals made. Ugoka paced the Hokies’ offense that hit a season-best 52.7 percent from the field. She also added eight rebounds and two steals.
Whiteside was the lone Jacket in double figures in Georgia Tech’s 52-44 win over Washington as she led the team with a career-high 19 points. She connected on 7-of 16 of her field goal attempts, and added four rebounds and a steal in 30 minutes of action.
The weekly honors for Ugoka and Whiteside are their first of the season.
ACC women’s basketball action resumes on Friday, Dec. 28 with five teams in action.
