Week 8: Former Wolfpack Hoopsters Enjoy Abbreviated Week Of Action
July 22, 2002 After a few days off due to the WNBA All-Star break, NC State's four former players took part in action later in the week. Charlotte's Andrea Stinson started for the East in place of Washington's injured star Chamique Holdsclaw and scored nine points in 20 minutes, but that was not enough as the West won the showdown 81-76 in the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. Stinson and the Sting fared better on Wednesday when they handed the Orlando Miracle a 27-point loss. Stinson played 19 minutes, racking up 13 points and eight assists on five-for-seven shooting from the floor. Former Wolfpacker Summer Erb also pitched in three points in 11 minutes in the victory. Charlotte continued its winning ways on Friday when it dealt the Sacramento Monarchs a 70-51 loss. Stinson scored 11 points in 28 minutes, while contributing six rebounds and five assists as well. Erb accounted for four points in 12 minutes. Cleveland's Chasity Melvin put up another solid week of numbers, beginning in Wednesday's 58-48 win over the Minnesota Lynx. In that game, Melvin registered another double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds to go with three blocks. In Friday's 63-50 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, Melvin tossed in five points and eight rebounds in 30 minutes. Houston's Tynesha Lewis saw action in all three of the Comets' games this week, starting with Wednesday's 75-67 loss to the Utah Starzz. Lewis connected on one field goal (a three-pointer) and one free throw in seven minutes of play. On Friday, the Comets fell to the Portland Fire 70-60. Lewis tallied a rebound and an assist in that game before playing just one minute the next night against the Seattle Storm, a 56-54 Houston triumph. This week, Stinson, Erb and the Sting will square off with the Indiana Fever at 8:00 p.m. on Monday. On Wednesday, Charlotte will head to Cleveland for a high noon matchup with Melvin's Rockers. The following afternoon, the two teams will have a return bout in Charlotte, also at noon. Charlotte will conclude its week on Saturday, when it hosts the Detroit Shock at 6:00 p.m. Aside from its games with Charlotte, Cleveland will face the New York Liberty in Madison Square Garden at 7:30 on Monday before concluding the week on Sunday in Cleveland when it hosts the Orlando Miracle at 7:00 p.m.
Houston will begin the week at home against Seattle at 8:30 p.m. before it squares off with the Miami Sol at 8:30 on Thursday. The Comets' final game will be on Sunday against New York at 2:00 p.m. on NBC.
