Catching Up With The WNBA's Tar Heels
July 16, 2002
Five former Tar Heels -- LaQuanda Barksdale, Sylvia Crawley, Tracy Reid, Charlotte Smith and Nikki Teasley -- are enjoying productive summers in the WNBA. As the league heads into its second half, TarHeelBlue.com takes a look at the season thus far. LaQuanda Barksdale
Although she's currently on the injured list, LaQuanda Barksdale's second WNBA season hasn't been all bad. After appearing in only five contests last season as a rookie, she has played in all but three games this year and has started three. On June 20, she scored a career-high 13 points, grabbed four rebounds and recorded a steal against the Indiana Fever. On July 1 at Cleveland, her late three-point play helped seal the win for the Fire. Barksdale is averaging 5.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game and is ranked seventh in the WNBA in free throw percentage (88.5 percent). The 5-11 forward was placed on the injured list on July 7, two days after she underwent surgery to repair her fractured left middle finger. She suffered the injury in practice on June 5 and played in the next 13 games. Midway through the season, Portland is fourth place in the Western Conference with an 11-9 record. The team saw a seven-game winning streak snapped with an overtime loss to Los Angeles on July 12.
Sylvia Crawley
In her third WNBA season, Sylvia Crawley has maintained her spot as Portland's starting center. She's averaging 8.9 points per game after scoring in double figures in four of the last five contests and is pulling in 4.0 rebounds per game. Her 19 total blocks (.95 per game) rank 10th in the league. Crawley scored a season-high 18 points in an overtime loss to Los Angeles on July 12, Portland's last game before the All-Star break. She also had a season-high five blocks in the loss.
Tracy Reid
Playing for her third WNBA team in a five-year career, Tracy Reid is averaging 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds for the Phoenix Mercury. An offseason trade sent her from Miami to Phoenix, and she missed the preseason there with a strained right hamstring. She also spent a week (June 25-July 1) on the injured list with a sprained right ankle, but has played in a total of 16 games, starting nine. In just her second game with her new team, Reid put up her best performance of the season, with 16 points (7-of-11 shooting from the field) in a 71-66 win against Utah. It remains her only double-figure outing of the season. She's averaging 19.2 minutes per game and is expected to be in the starting lineup when the Mercury, 8-11 overall and sixth in the Western Conference, resumes action on July 17 with a game at Portland.
Charlotte Smith
Charlotte Smith has started all 19 games for the Sting, 11-8 and second in the Eastern Conference. In her fourth year in the league, all in Charlotte, she's averaging a career-best 7.7 points per game and has scored in double figures 10 times. Her best outing of the season thus far came against Detroit on June 26, when she totaled 13 points in an 80-73 win. She was 5-for-6 from the field (including 1-for-1 from three-point range), made her two free throw attempts and added four rebounds and a steal in 22 minutes of play. Her current averages for rebounds per game (3.7), minutes per game (28.8) and field goal percentage (44.1) also are career highs.
Nikki Teasley
Nikki Teasley, the fifth pick in the 2002 WNBA Draft, has started every game this season for defending-champion Los Angeles. (She was drafted by Portland, but traded to L.A. on draft day.) She currently ranks sixth in the WNBA in assists per game (4.9), sixth in total assists (88) and 12th in assists per turnover (2.1). Teasley scored 15 points in the team's first preseason game and has totaled 12 twice in the regular season, in wins at Houston and Phoenix. She's averaging 6.0 points per game while shooting 43.4 percent from the field and 81.8 from the free throw line Los Angeles is 15-3 overall and leads the Western Conference into the second half of the season.
