Former Wolfpack Women Named to WNBA All-Star Game
July 12, 2001 Former NC State All-Americans Andrea Stinson and Chasity Melvin were named to the WNBA All-Star team in a vote by the league head coaches. The duo will be members of the Eastern Conference team at the WNBA All-Star game to be held Monday in Orlando. This is the second consecutive year Stinson has been named a WNBA All-Star. She is the leader of the Charlotte Sting, averaging 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Earlier this season, Stinson became just the fourth player in the history of the WNBA to record 2,000 career points. Melvin will be making her first trip to the WNBA All-Star game but will be unable to compete due to a fractured orbital bone suffered in a game versus the Houston Comets last weekend. She is expected to miss two to three weeks. Melvin averaged 11.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists to lead the Cleveland Rockers to a 14-5 record in the first half of the season and a share of first place in the Eastern Conference.
Along with NC State, the only other schools to place two former players on the WNBA All-Star team are Tennessee, Louisiana Tech and Southern Cal. Virginia's Dawn Staley was the only other ACC player to make the squad in addition to Melvin and Stinson.
