UVa Women's Hoops Squad Holds Annual Banquet

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Seniors Lisa Hosac (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) and Renee Robinson (E. Palo Alto, Calif./Sacred Heart) were named the Cavaliers of the Year and freshman Schuye LaRue (Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll) was named Virginia's Rookie of the Year tonight at the women's basketball banquet at the DoubleTree Hotel. Svetlana Volnaya (Minsk, Belarus) was named the Best Offensive Player and shared the Best Defensive Player with Hosac. The Most Improved Player Award went to sophomore Telisha Quarles (Louisa, Va./Louisa) and the team leadership Award went to seniors Lauren Swierczek (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven), Hosac and Robinson. Swierczek also picked up the Bob Williams Award which is given to the player which best represents the academic and athletic partnership. Dean'na Mitchelson (Bakersfield, Calif. /Bakersfield) was presented the Unsung Hero Award. Two new scholarship awards were presented for the first time the Thomas J. Ryan Scholarship was presented to Quarles and the Alumni Scholarship Award was given to freshman Marcie Dickson (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia). The statistical awards for Highest Free Throw Percentage went to Hosac, Most Assists went to Robinson and the Rebounding Award was given to LaRue. The Cavaliers finished the season with a 25-9 overall record and a 13-3 ACC record, made their 17th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and finished the season ranked 14th in USA Today poll.
