No. 7 Maryland versus No. 8 Wake Forest
Friday, February 26 - 6:00 PM

Maryland owns a 4-0 series record against Wake Forest in the history of the ACC Tournament...the last time the Terrapins faced the Demon Deacons in postseason play was the 1990 event when No. 4 Maryland defeated No. 5 Wake Forest 87-68 . . . a year ago, Chris Weller's No. 6 seeded Terps advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament for the first time since the 1994 event in Rock Hill pulling out a 61-48 upset of No. 3 seeded NC State; the team eventually loss to No. 2 seeded Clemson 63-44...only three members of the Maryland squad have experience in the tournament - Tiffany Brown (3.0 ppg), Kelley Gibson (5.3 ppg), and Branka Bogunovic (2.5 ppg) . . . the Demon Deacons are 5-21 in the history of the tournament after suffering a 78-67 loss at the hands of the Florida State Seminoles a year ago in the first round game...among the eight Wake players who have played at least one tournament game, Alisha Mosley and Heidi Coleman lead the way averaging just over 10 points a game.

No. 1 Duke versus No. 9 Florida State

Friday's first round game between the Blue Devils and the Seminoles marks the first meeting between the two teams in the history in the program . . . Duke captured the ACC regular season crown for the second consecutive year after posting a school-record 15-1 mark against league foes...the Blue Devils have participated in the tournament semifinals four consecutive years and have twice advanced to the championship game (1995 and 1996)...after compiling a 2-17 mark in the first 17 tournaments, the team has posted a 6-4 record in the last four years . . . with the new format, Florida State will vie to become the first No. 9 seed to advance to the semifinals in the history of the tournament...in last season's tournament, the Seminoles were seeded No. 7 marking the first time since 1993 that FSU did not participate in the first round game...only two of Sue Semrau's current student-athletes have played in more than one tournament game - Arleshia Davidson (7.0 ppg) and Jen Robinson (3.75 ppg).

No. 4 Clemson vs. No. 5 NC State

NC State owns a 6-3 series lead against Clemson in tournament play, but the Tigers have won the last three meetings, including an 87-75 victory over the Wolfpack in the 1997 quarterfinals as the No. 6 seed...the last time NC State beat Clemson in the tournament was an 84-61 victory for the No. 3 seeded Wolfpack over the No. 4 seeded Tigers . . . Jim Davis' team will attempt to take one step closer to making its fourth consecutive trip to the ACC Tournament championship game...the Tigers claimed the 1996 title with a 71-54 win over Duke, but lost to North Carolina in both the 1997 (62-58) and 1998 (81-50) championship games...backcourt tandem Itoro Umoh and Amy Geren have each scored in double digits in five of the nine previous tournament games they've played in...in her last six tournament games, Umoh is averaging 16.5 points . . . NC State, with 11 title game appearances, have advanced to the finals more times than any other team in the 21-year history of the event...the Wolfpack are 28-17 in the tournament having claimed four ACC crowns...in the 1998 quarterfinals, No. 3 seeded NC State was up-ended by No. 6 seeded Maryland 61-48 as Kay Yow's team shot only .355 percent from the field.

No. 2 Virginia vs. No. 7 Maryland or No. 8 Wake Forest

The Cavaliers are 5-6 versus the Terrapins and 3-0 versus the Demon Deacons in the ACC Tournament...the last time Virginia played Maryland in postseason play was March 3, 1995 when the top-seeded Cavaliers defeated No. 9 seeded Maryland 68-46...the year before, UVa was again the No. 1 seed and the team came away with a 73-54 victory over No. 8 Wake Forest in the quarterfinals . . . Debbie Ryan's teams have tallied three league tournament crowns (1990, 1992, 1993), with their last championship game appearance coming in 1994... the Cavaliers were the No. 5 seed in the 1998 tournament, marking the team's lowest finish since the 1989 season...No. 4 seeded North Carolina beat Virginia 76-56, holding the Cavs to their lowest scoring total since losing to NC State 57-56 in the 1987 championship game...five current UVa players have participated in at least three tournament games.

No. 3 North Carolina vs. No. 6 Georgia Tech

Defending champion North Carolina owns a 3-0 record versus Georgia Tech in the history of the tournament with the teams' last meeting coming in 1994 when the Tar Heels pulled out a 78-55 victory despite momentary stoppage in action due to a power outage...the No. 3 seed is 18-3 versus the No. 6 seed . . . the Tar Heels have won five conference crowns, including four of the last five (1984, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998)...a year ago, North Carolina had to go through three top 25 opponents in order to claim the conference crown...as the No. 4 seed, Sylvia Hatchell's team defeated No. 15-ranked Virginia 76-56, No. 8-ranked Duke 56-52 and No. 16-ranked Clemson 81-50 as Tournament MVP Tracy Reid averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds . . . the Yellow Jackets are 3-19 in tournament annals as No. 8 Georgia Tech defeated No. 9 Wake Forest 78-67 in the 1998 first round game...the victory over the Demon Deacons marked the Jackets first tournament win since the team's 1992 championship run that found No. 7 Georgia Tech upsetting No. 2 seeded Maryland 68-67 and No. 3 seeded Clemson 74-73, before dropping a 70-69 decision to top-seeded Virginia...senior Kenya Williams has averaged 10.0 points in four tournament games, including a 27-point performance versus Wake Forest a year ago.
