Feb. 21, 2011
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Miami junior guard Shenise Johnson and Maryland freshman forward Alyssa Thomas earned Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors presented by Chevrolet for the period ending Feb. 20.
The accolades are voted on by the league's "Blue Ribbon Panel," which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives. The panelists will also vote on the ACC's postseason All-Conference teams for the 2010-11 season.
The weekly award marked the third for Johnson this season and fifth over her career, while Thomas earned the ACC Rookie of the Week nod for the sixth time this season.
Johnson poured in 30 points for the second time in three games as the Hurricanes overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Boston College 90-80 in Chestnut Hill on Thursday night. The Henrietta, N.Y., native also grabbed seven rebounds and handed out a team-high eight assists in the Canes' lone game of the week.
Thomas has now scored in double figures in 10 of 11 ACC games. She notched her seventh double-double of the year against No. 7 Duke with 15 points and 10 boards, while 13 of her 15 points came in the second half. At Florida State on Sunday, the newcomer from Harrisburg, Pa., notched a new career high with 26 points on 11-for-22 shooting. She pulled down six boards, while 16 of her points came in the Terps' surge - allowing Maryland to outscore the Seminoles 38-36 in the second period.
ACC women's basketball action continues tonight as two ACC contests take place - Wake Forest at Duke and North Carolina at NC State. Both games will tip-off at 7 p.m. ET, while the most-played ACC game in women's basketball history between North Carolina and NC State can be viewed on the league's Regional Sports Network.
