Jan. 30, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech sophomore guard Monet Tellier and Clemson freshman guard/forward Nikki Dixon earned Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 29.
Tellier led the Hokies to a 75-69 win over No. 8/7 Maryland with a career-high tying 31 points, including a career-high five 3-pointers while shooting 10-of-11 from the free throw line. It is the second time this year Tellier hit the 31-point mark, and she is one of two ACC players to top 30 points twice this season. The win was the first time Tech has recorded a victory against a top-eight team since 1998. The native of Charlotte, N.C., sparked a run with back-to-back threes that helped the Hokies push past the Terrapins. The sophomore guard turned in one of her best free throw shooting performance weeks of the season, hitting 90.5 percent (19-21). Tellier also led the Hokies in scoring against Miami and NC State with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
Dixon had two games in double-figures against nationally ranked teams to win her second Rookie of the Week honor this season. For the week, she averaged 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals, and 2.0 assists against No. 5 Duke and No. 24 Georgia Tech. The native of Alpharetta, Ga., is averaging 12.2 points per game this season, second among all league freshmen, and her 2.7 steals rank in the top five in the conference. Dixon had 18 points and a career-high tying eight rebounds against Georgia Tech, hitting 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
ACC women’s basketball action continues tonight as the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils put their 34-game home winning streak on the line when they welcome No. 3 Connecticut to Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
