![]() Women's Basketball ACCtion: Sunday, January 28
Jan. 28, 2007 NC State's A Hoops For Hope Success at Reynolds Raleigh, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina State senior Gillian Goring was tickled pink to win Sunday, more than usual, because the Wolfpack's 64-46 victory was about more than another Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball game. It capped N.C. State's Hoops For Hope, a weekend honoring Wolfpack coach Kay Yow and her second fight in 20 years against breast cancer. Sunday's win was Yow's 698th overall and her second since returning to duty after missing 16 games to undergo treatments. Jackets Dominate Demon Deacons, 58-45 Winston-Salem, N.C. - Janie Mitchell led all scorers with 18 points and seven rebounds in Sunday's 58-45 win over Wake Forest (9-12, 0-7) lifting Georgia Tech (13-8, 4-3) to a winning record in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Janie Mitchell made her first start in six games Sunday after a knee injury sidelined her for four games. The junior co-captain opened scoring for the Jackets when she rebounded a Chioma Nnamaka miss and tipped it in for the score. Davis And Whitehurst Lead Clemson To 79-69 Victory Over Miami On Sunday CORAL GABLES, FL - Clemson senior Carrie Whitehurst drained a career-high five three-point shots while center Moreemi Davis recorded the first double-double of her career in guiding the Lady Tigers (10-12, 2-5 ACC) to a 79-69 victory over Miami (10-12, 1-6 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, FL. Whitehurst was 5-of-7 from behind the arc for 15 total points, bettering her previous best of three made several times during her four-year career. Davis totaled 11 points while collecting a career-high 10 rebounds to help Clemson out-rebound the Hurricanes by a 44-33 margin. Seminoles Clip The Cavs, 63-47 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State women's basketball team had a lot to celebrate Sunday afternoon at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Not only did FSU retire the jerseys of Seminole greats Tia Paschal and Wanda Burns-Jackson at halftime and honor head coach Sue Semrau throughout the game for her 10th anniversary at Florida State, but the Seminoles also beat Virginia for the third straight time in the series and with the 63-47 victory, improved to 16-5 overall and 5-1 in ACC play. UVA fell to 12-9 overall and 2-5 in the league. "This was a great win for us," FSU head coach Sue Semrau said. "We were being outrebounded by 10 at halftime which is something we are not used to but we came out much more aggressive on the boards in the second half and also shot much better." No. 2 Tarheels Top Defending Champions No. 3 Maryland COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -Playing on the road against the defending national champions before an energized sellout crowd, No. 2 North Carolina didn't flinch. Ivory Latta scored a season-high 32 points, and the unbeaten Tar Heels extracted a measure of revenge against No. 3 Maryland with an 84-71 victory Sunday night. The crowd of 17,950 was the largest to watch a women's basketball game in Atlantic Coast Conference history, surpassing the 17,243 that viewed the Terrapins' loss to Duke in February 2005. Maryland has hosted the top five crowds in ACC history. On this night, however, the Terps (21-2, 5-2) waited too long to match the intensity of their enthusiastic fans. Maryland fell behind with five minutes elapsed and never caught up, crumbling under a series of turnovers and missed shots.
