Florida State's Jacinta Monroe and Maryland's Lynetta Kizer Earn ACC Weekly Honors
Jan. 19, 2009 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Florida State's Jacinta Monroe and Maryland's Lynetta Kizer were named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 18. Monroe led the Seminoles to a flawless 2-0 mark on the week, including an upset victory over No. 25 Georgia Tech, while Kizer posted two double-double performances in three contests for the 12th-ranked Terrapins. Monroe averaged a double-double last week with 14.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in leading the Seminoles to a 2-0 record, including a 10-point win over No. 24 Georgia Tech. The junior nearly recorded a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocks in the win over the Yellow Jackets. The nine blocks broke FSU's single-game record (previous record was 8 by Brooke Wyckoff in 1997) and is the most of any ACC player this season. Monroe shot 52 percent from the field and 63 percent from the free throw line and averaged 6.0 blocks in the two games. The forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has scored in double figures in 16 games this season and is now just 15 blocks shy of tying FSU's all-time record (209). She has helped FSU to a perfect 5-0 record in 2009 and a seven-game winning streak overall. Kizer put up double-doubles in both contests at Duke and against Virginia Tech and now has six in her freshman campaign to lead the team this season. The rookie from Woodbridge, Va., averaged 13.0 points per game and 11.0 boards per contest for the week. Kizer led the team in rebounding at Duke and tied for the most boards of any player against Virginia Tech. She was the only Terrapin to make her way to the free throw line against Duke, and returned a team-best 10 times against Virginia Tech, establishing a low-post presence for the team. The weekly honor marks the first weekly accolade of the season for both Monroe and Kizer. The honor is the first of Kizer's young career, while Monroe, who has not ever been named Player of the Week, earned Rookie of the Week accolades three times in 2006-07.
ACC action resumes action later today as Duke travels to nearby foe NC State for a 5 p.m. contest and No. 2 North Carolina welcomes No. 1 Connecticut to the Dean Smith Center. Tip off for the top two teams is slated for 7 p.m. ET. Visit TheACC.com for more information, including a complete 2008-09 women's basketball schedule.
