Boston College's Carolyn Swords and Florida State's Cierra Bravard Earn ACC Weekly Honors
Jan. 12, 2009 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Boston College's Carolyn Swords and Florida State's Cierra Bravard were named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 11. Swords recorded two double-doubles in the Eagles' pair of ACC wins last week against No. 22 Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, while Bravard helped her Seminoles to three wins, including a victory over No. 3 Texas A&M. Swords added two double-doubles last week en route to her sixth double-double of the season. She now has 11 in her career. The 6-foot-6 center had 18 points and 12 rebounds vs. Georgia Tech in a 65-64 overtime victory on Thursday night on the road. Against Virginia Tech at home on Sunday, Swords went 9-for-13 from the field and had 19 points and 10 rebounds. She opened the second half with seven straight points and two rebounds to break open a close game. Swords shot 64 percent (16-for-25) from the field for the week and grabbed 22 boards. She also had three blocks and four assists. In just 17.7 minutes of play off of the bench, Bravard averaged 13.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in helping to lead FSU to three victories this week including a win over No. 3 Texas A&M and a 2-0 start in ACC play. Bravard shot 58 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free throw line for the week. She led the Noles in scoring in her first career ACC game with 14 points and six rebounds in the win at Virginia Tech in just 17 minutes of play off of the bench. The Sandusky, Ohio, native added 17 points and eight boards in the Clemson victory and is averaging 15.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in ACC play. The weekly honor marks the first accolade of the season for Bravard, while it marks the second honor for Swords.
ACC action resumes action later today as Georgia Tech takes on Miami and Maryland faces Duke.
