No. 16 Tar Heels Outlast Clemson, 65-58

CLEMSON, S.C. --- Xylina McDaniel had 19 points, six rebounds and six steals and No. 16 North Carolina rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to beat Clemson, 65-58, Sunday afternoon at Littlejohn Coliseum in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams. Waltiea Rolle added 16 points and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt finished with 15 points, six boards and six steals as Carolina won its first league game for the 17th time in 19 years.

Nikki Dixon had 22 points for Clemson (4-8, 0-1 ACC), while Quinyotta Pettaway finished with 10 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.

The Lady Tigers' zone defense stifled Carolina for much of the afternoon and the Tar Heels turned it over 10 times in the games opening five minutes. Clemson led 34-28 at the break and stretched that lead to 10 early in the second half.

 

Deluzio Nets 25, Leads Noles Past BC

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Senior Alexa Deluzio tallied her first career double-double on Sunday at the Donald L. Tucker Center to lead the No. 21-ranked Florida State women's basketball team to a 76-70 ACC-opening victory over Boston College.

In the Seminoles' last meeting against the Eagles, Deluzio carried FSU to a 68-59 victory in Chestnut Hill on Jan. 19, 2012 by scoring a career-best 28 points and making six three pointers.


 

 

On Sunday, Deluzio didn't hit a three, but instead did her damage in the paint, ripping down a career-best 12 rebounds to go along with 25 points. She also dished six assists in a dominating effort.

 

Burke Leads Pack to Victory at St. Bonaventure

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Kody Burke capped an outstanding game with a put-back layup with 13 seconds left to secure a 70-66 NC State victory over St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at Reilly Center.

Leading by double figures most of the second half, and by as many as 18 points, NC State (8-5) held off a furious Bonnies comeback to become the first opposing team – men or women – to win at Reilly Center this season.

NC State shot 53.6 percent (30-for-56) from the field, its fifth time this year breaking the 50-percent barrier. Burke was in fine form all game long, leading the Pack with 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting and seven rebounds.

Marissa Kastanek and Krystal Barrett each had 12 points for the Wolfpack.     

 

Hokies down Hampton, 55-45

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team defeated Hampton, 55-45, in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.

Monet Tellier scored all 14 of her points in the second half to lead the Hokies (7-5). She also pulled down a team-best six rebounds, handed out two assists and picked up a steal. Alyssa Fenyn added 11 points and four rebounds. Lauren Evans had nine points. Hannah Young grabbed four steals

 

No. 4 Duke Routs Monmouth 73-32

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke's defense was too quick, too tall and too strong for overmatched Monmouth, and it added up to a share of an NCAA record.

The fourth-ranked Blue Devils held Monmouth to a Division I record-tying three points in the first half of a 73-32 rout Sunday.

The Hawks managed just one field goal in the opening 20 minutes against the Blue Devils (11-0). They matched the NCAA's halftime scoring mark set in 2003 by Savannah State against Florida State and equaled by Tennessee State two years ago against Georgia Tech.

 

Georgia Tech Wins Sun & Fun Classic 65-63 Over FIU

MIAMI - Junior Dawnn Maye was named Sun & Fun Classic Tournament MVP after leading the Yellow Jackets to a 65-63 win over host FIU in the championship game Sunday night at US Century Bank Arena in Miami.

It is the second time Georgia Tech has won the Sun & Fun Classic. The Yellow Jackets defeated FIU 68-57 in the 2009 tournament. Junior Tyaunna Marshall was also named to the all-tournament team.

Maye had nine points, five assists and two steals playing all 40 minutes against FIU. Maye knocked down two key free throws late to pull Georgia Tech within 63-62 with 2:04 left. Maye had 24 points and six rebounds in Tech's first round win over Quinnipiac.

Marshall tossed in 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in only 25 minutes against FIU. She had 13 points and tied her career-high of 14 rebounds against Quinnipiac. Freshman Roddreka Rogers tossed in 11 points, including five of Tech's first seven points in the second half.
