Nov. 29, 2012 Upset City: Canes Take Down No. 6 Lady Lions Virginia Defeats Minnesota in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Virginia women's basketball team earned a 90-68 victory at Minnesota in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game. The Gophers started the game making six of their first seven field goal attempts, including going 4-for-5 from three-point range to take an early 16-6 lead. Kelsey Wolfe kept the Cavaliers in the game, scoring seven of UVa's first nine points. Trailing 18-10, the Cavaliers began to make their run. Simone Egwu, making her first appearance of the season, got a put back and drew a foul to narrow the gap to 18-13. Ataira Franklin scored the next five points, with a pull-up jumper followed by a game-tying three-pointer. A low-post feed to Sarah Beth Barnette set the Cavaliers up for their first lead of the game, 20-18, after Barnette drew a foul and converted her two free throws.
NC State Falls to Michigan State in ACC/Big Ten Challenge RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the 2012-13 campaign, as Michigan State downed the Wolfpack, 68-51, in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge contest Thursday evening at Reynolds Coliseum. Junior guard Myisha Goodwin-Coleman and junior center Markeisha Gatling led the Pack with 10 points apiece, while junior forward Kody Burke chipped in nine points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and two blocks on the night. Career Nights From Boykin and Hamby Not Enough As Deacs Fall At Illinois 95-82 CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Senior Lakevia Boykin and junior Dearica Hamby each had career nights for Wake Forest but Illinois made more plays down the stretch and pulled-out a 95-82 victory Thursday evening. The Deacons dropped their fifth-straight game and are now 2-5 on the year. Illinois improves to 4-2 on the season with the victory. Boykin had the hot hand from outside, draining a career-high six three pointers and finishing with a career-high 28 points. She was 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and grabbed eight rebounds. |
