CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Miami women's basketball team saw junior guard Riquna Williams score her 1,000th career point in the Hurricanes 96-64 victory over Miami (OH), Saturday afternoon at the BankUnited Center.
Williams came into the game needing 17 points to reach the scoring plateau and with 8:47 remaining, the Pahokee, Fla. native took a pass from fellow junior Shenise Johnson on a fast break and laid it in easily.
Williams, a Second Team All-ACC selection a season ago scored 707 points as a sophomore - the third most prolific single season total in program history.
Johnson ended the contest with a game-high 24 points. She also grabbed 11 rebounds, recording her second double-double of the season and the 18th of her career. The Henrietta, N.Y. native also had her hand in on an early season-best five steals.
Burlington, VT - The Boston College women's basketball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 85-50 victory over Vermont at the TD Bank Classic, hosted by Vermont at the Patrick Gymnasium. The Eagles went 2-0 in the tournament with a first round win against Dartmouth. Vermont is now 0-4 in the early season.
The Eagles were led by freshman Kristen Doherty with 21 points, while shooting 5-for-5 from the three-point arc. She added six steals and six assists. Seniors Stefanie Murphy and Carolyn Swords each posted double-doubles. Murphy had 16 points and 11 rebounds while Swords had 13 points and 11 rebounds. It was Murphy's first double-double of the season of the season and Swords fourth consecutive.
Senior guard Jaclyn Thoman had 11 points and six assists in the win.
Boston College opened the game on a 6-2 run on four points from Swords and a jumper from senior Jaclyn Thoman. Vermont converted two BC turnovers and BC led 8-4 at 15:46. BC's lead grew behind the Eagles pressure defense and 50 percent shooting with six minutes to play in the half. With under four minutes BC held a 29-12 lead. BC led 39-14 at the half. Swords had 12 points and eight boards, while Doherty notched 11 points, two assists and two boards. BC held a 24-17 lead on the boards.
Wolfpack Comeback Falls Short at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond outlasted a furious second-half comeback by NC State to record an 81-75 win over the Wolfpack Saturday afternoon at Robins Center.
Sophomore Marissa Kastanek led four double-digit scorers for NC State (2-2) with 19 points. Amber White added 16 points, Bonae Holston posted her second double-double of the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Brittany Strachan added 12.
Brittani Shells continued her torrid scoring pace with a game-high 28 points. She has scored at least 25 points in all four games for Richmond (3-1) this season. Abby Oliver had 19 points, and Krist Puthoff-King had 10.
The game amounted to a tale of two completely different halves of basketball. After giving up 52 points in the first half, and trailed by 15 points going into halftime, NC State clamped down its defense to rally back to make it a one-possession game in the final minutes.
