Virginia Beats NC State, 66-56, in ACC Tourney

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Third seed Virginia used a 32-8 run in the second half to overcome a 10-point deficit and beat No. 6 seed NC State in the quarterfinal round of the 2003 ACC Women's Basketball Tournament in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday. The Cavaliers (16-12) advance to the semifinal round on Sunday, March 9 against No. 2 seed North Carolina (26-4), which beat Clemson, 80-71. Fox Sports Net South will televise the game live at 3:30 p.m. "When we started, I felt like we were a little nervous and out of sync," said UVa head coach Debbie Ryan. "Anna Crosswhite lit a fire under this team. She ignited everybody else. We didn't have much before she got in the game and turned us around." In the first half, NC State jumped out to a seven-point lead, 10-3, UVa claimed its first lead at 15-13, but the Wolfpack went ahead again to enter the locker room with a 10-point lead, 34-24. In the second half, the Hoos stormed onto the court and opened the stanza with a 15-2 lead. Virginia held NC State to just eight points until the 9:43 mark. Sophomore Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) recorded her fifth double-double with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Anna Prillaman (Midlothian, Va.) added her first career double-double with 10 points and a season-high 10 rebounds. "Basically we had to play with a sense of urgency and take better care of the ball," Teamer said. "We knew they (NC State) would come out fighting. We prepared well and played good defense." "We knuckled down and played hard," Crosswhite said. "We played as a team on defense and got crucial rebounds." Terah James led the Wolfpack with 15 points, while Amelia Labador had 11. Nanna Rivers added 10 points.
