Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors:
"We are very excited and happy and proud of this team. I am happy for
the seniors in particular.
The underclassmen said they wanted to play for the seniors because of
all they have done for this
program. This was by far our best defensive effort of the year. I
thought it was great team
defense. I just thought it was an excellent showing of great defense."
"We did want to come out and run on them because we felt they would be
tired. I said we
probably would not win the game in the first ten minutes but in the last
ten they would be
fatigued."
Duke senior Rochelle Parent:
"We are just honored to be in this position. We realize how difficult it
is to win the regular
season ACC and the ACC Tournament. This is the first time for our
program. We feel very
special and we are happy to bring this honor back to the school."
Duke senior Georgia Schweitzer:
"I think we played a great team game. This is one of the first times
this year that everyone played a great game. We have struggled with
consistency this year."
Duke senior Georgia Schweitzer on her game tonight:
"I got some really good looks but I was just not able to put them down.
That's all right because everyone has a rough night. I pulled Sheana and
Alana aside before the game and told them that they needed to step up."
NC State head coach Kay Yow:
"I feel badly that we didn't give the crowd a better championship game.
That's my first thought. We can do better than that. I would also have
said that if we held Duke to less than 60 points, we would have an
awesome chance of winning this game. And defensively, even though we
weren't quite ready defensively at the opening of the game, by the end
of the half, we were really playing well defensively."
"Honestly, to think we shot 25 percent for the game. We only lost to
them by 12 points, one of the top five teams in the country. All of that
is really hard to put into perspective. But we really needed a much
stronger game offensively. It was just six baskets. If we could have
done just a little better, and shot 35 percent for the game, I think the
game would have gone down to the wire. ... I don't know if it was our
poorest shooting night of the year, but it was certainly one of them."
NC State senior Tynesha Lewis:
"I think they scored on the first seven possessions. They did a great
job of getting up and down the floor and they did knock down some shots.
I don't think in the first couple of possessions we played as well
defensively as we did the rest of the game."
