Inside and Out, Duke Women Too Much For FSU
January 25, 1999 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Ninth-ranked Duke shot 58 percent from 3-point range and got 26 points from 6-foot-6 center Michele VanGorp on its way to a 92-75 win over Florida State on Monday. The Blue Devils (16-4, 9-0 ACC) beat Florida State (6-12, 1-8) for the 10th straight time. Duke won its 12th straight game since losing to No. 3 Tennessee on Jan. 6. "We knew Duke was a tremendously balanced team, but to do what they did on the road was incredible," Florida State coach Sue Semrau said. "They've got some tremendous shooters and then when you have someone as agile as VanGorp on the inside, it's tough to match up." Duke led 46-34 at halftime, outscoring Florida State 21-6 in the final five minutes to erase a three-point deficit. The Blue Devils were coming off a five-point win over North Carolina, which gave them sole possession of first place in the ACC. "We were a little flat at the outset and I was concerned about that since we were coming off an emotional victory," said Duke coach Gail Goestenkors. "But we did what was necessary to come out with the victory." The Seminoles never got closer than 11 points in the second half. After Florida State scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to 75-62 with 6:57 left, VanGorp scored inside on three straight possessions to push the lead to 81-65. The Seminoles, who trailed by as many as seven points early in the game, took a 28-25 lead with 6:12 remaining in the first half on a layup by Angela Sutton.
But Duke scored nine straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers by
Howard, to take a 37-28 lead.
