Women's Basketball ACCtion: Thursday, January 1
Jan. 1, 2009
Deacs Overcome Slow Start to Top UNCW 72-58 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After trailing through the first half, Wake Forest point guard Brooke Thomas picked UNC Wilmington's pocket and netted a fast break layup to open the second half and set the stage for a WFU rally that ended with a 72-58 Demon Deacon victory. The Demon Deacons improved to 12-0 with the win, continuing to extend the program win-streak record. The Seahawks now stand at 6-5 for the season. Wake Forest senior Corinne Groves led the game with a career-high 24 points, followed by Alex Tchangoue who netted 20 and also pulled ten boards for her second double-double of the season. Brittany Blackwell was the high scorer for the Seahawks with 16 points and Greta Lukste had a team-high six rebounds. Groves is now just 19 points shy of her 1,000th career point. If she stays on track Groves will likely hit the mark during Wake's three-game road swing that begins on January 6. Alex Tchangoue is not far behind her classmate, with 972 career points after Thursday's 20 point performance. With her 10 rebounds vs. UNCW, Tchangoue joined Wake's 600 rebound club, holding 608 career caroms.
