    Mike Petersen
    Head Coach
    Mike Petersen
Mike Petersen enters his fifth season at Wake Forest after taking the reigns of the program in April of 2004. In his first year at the helm, Petersen guided the Demon Deacons to a 17-15 record, marking their first winning season since 1991. Petersen also led Wake Forest to the quarterfinals of the WNIT in the school's second-ever postseason appearance, and first since 1988. In 2008, Petersen guided the Demon Deacons to a 15-15 overall record, including a 53-46 win over No. 11/10 Texas A&M on Nov. 23, 2007.

Petersen came to Winston-Salem after five years with the Minnesota Golden Gopher men's basketball program, where he served as associate head coach for his final four years there. Petersen joined the Golden Gophers in 1999 after serving three seasons as head coach of the TCU women's basketball program from 1996-99. After inheriting a program that went 3-52 in the two years prior to his arrival, Petersen guided the Horned Frogs to the program's first-ever winning season, first-ever conference tournament victory and a then-school-record 16 wins in 1999. Prior to taking over at TCU, Petersen was the women's head coach at New Mexico State University, where he went 81-38 from 1992-96.

Petersen spent three years as an assistant coach with the men's program at the University of Oregon prior to his stint at New Mexico State. Before his move to Oregon, Petersen was the head women's coach at Gonzaga University, where he posted a 65-48 record in four seasons. In 15 years as a women's basketball head coach, Petersen has produced nine winning seasons, including four with at least 20 wins. Before moving into the coaching ranks, Petersen enjoyed a stellar college playing career.

He began his collegiate career at the College of the Redwoods in Eureka, Calif. After two seasons, he transferred to Northwest Christian College, an NAIA school in Eugene, Ore.

    Senior Guard
    Alex Tchangoue
Wake Forest's senior class features Corinne Groves and Alex Tchangoue, the team's leading scorers from 2007-08. Both have finished in double-digit point averages for back-to-back seasons. Groves and Tchangoue will likely join Wake's 600-rebound club in 2007-08. Groves has tallied 593 boards in three years, while Tchangoue has posted 535. Only six Deacons have achieved the mark in program history,

Erin Ferrell was the most recent, registering 626 when her career ended in 2005. Tchangoue is on track to earn a spot on the school's all-time minutes played list. Averaging just under 35 minutes per game last season, the standout has logged 2,759 minutes in three years.

The Demon Deacons welcome three freshmen to the squad this season. Brooke Thomas is a 5-4 guard who played with current sophomore Brittany Waters at Edgewater High School in Orlando, Fla. Secily Ray is a local standout, hailing from Thomasville High, about 20 minutes outside of Winston-Salem.

    Senior Forward
    Corrine Groves
Patrice Johnson was a late addition, signing with the Deacons in April 2008. Johnson earned All-Met honors as a guard at HD Woodson in Washington, D.C.

After suffering a season-ending stress fracture in January, sophomore Camille Collier will return to the court and compete for the starting point guard position. In her rookie campaign, Collier played in 23 contests with eight starts, averaging 8.2 points per game.

Wake Forest took a big hit in the front court after the 2007-08 season, losing 6-2 senior Christen Brown to graduation as well as 6-4 Mekia Valentine, who transferred at the end of the school year. The Deacons will rely heavily on Groves, while also looking for action from juniors Jessie Cain, Jessica Bryant and Sarah Riddle. In addition, Brittany Waters, who served as a guard for the injury-plagued Deacons last season, may see time at the post in the upcoming year.
