    Sylvia Hatchell enters her 23rd season at the helm for North Carolina, and has guided the Tar Heels to 13 ACC Tournament finals in the past 15 seasons and a league-leading eight ACC titles. In the past 17 seasons, North Carolina has received 15 bids to the NCAA Tournament, including 2008 when Hatchell led the Heels to their 20th NCAA Tournament appearance. Hatchell directed North Carolina to its fourth consecutive 30-win season last year as the 2008 Tar Heels finished 33-3 and a flawless 14-0 in ACC action. The Tar Heels have recorded 20 or more wins 15 times over the past 17 seasons. Hatchell guided North Carolina to ACC Tournament titles in 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. She became just the fifth Division I women's basketball coach to reach 700 career wins, a feat that came on January 15, 2006 versus NC State.

    In 1994, Hatchell guided the Tar Heels to 33 wins and the NCAA Division I title, the first NCAA title won by an ACC school. Hatchell was named USA Today's National Coach of the Year in 1994 and ACC Coach of the Year in 1997. She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on June 12, 2004.

    Prior to coming to Chapel Hill, she coached 11 seasons at Francis Marion, where she led the 1986 team to a 36-2 record and the NAIA national championship. Her 1982 team won the AIAW national championship in the small college division. Hatchell has accumulated six gold medals and one silver in international competition as either a head or an assistant coach for U.S. women's teams.

    Hatchell graduated cum laude from Carson-Newman, where she played basketball and volleyball. She was named Carson-Newman Alumnus of the Year in 1994 and inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1999.

    The Tar Heels finished with 33 wins, becoming just the fifth program in NCAA history to win at least 30 games in four or more consecutive seasons. North Carolina also earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

    North Carolina won its fourth straight ACC Tournament championship, defeating Duke, 86-73.

    Seniors Erlana Larkins, who was named Tournament MVP, and LaToya Pringle ended their careers with a perfect 12-0 record in ACC Tournament play.

    The Tar Heels finished No. 2 in the AP poll and No. 5 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, marking the fourth straight year in which UNC finished in the Top 10 in both major polls.

    consensus first-team All-America performer. Pringle, who earned honorable mention AP All- America honors, was also the ACC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocked shots throughout the season.

    North Carolina finished a perfect 14-0 in ACC play for the first time in school history. It was the eighth perfect regular season in league history.

    Head coach Sylvia Hatchell enters 2008-09 just 16 wins shy of becoming the fourth coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the 800 win plateau. Hatchell's career record of 784-275 in 33 seasons makes her the third-winningest active coach in Division I.
