    Cristy McKinney
    Head Coach
    Cristy McKinney
Cristy McKinney is entering her fourth season as head coach at Clemson and her 18th overall. McKinney came to Clemson from Rice, where she was the head coach for 12 years. McKinney owns a 275-228 career record over her 17 years in the business as she led the Tigers to a 12-19 mark last season.

While at Rice, McKinney put together a 216-139 record, becoming the winningest coach in school history, and had nine consecutive winning seasons. In her last season with the Owls, McKinney led Rice to a 24-9 record, a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship, the WAC Tournament title and an NCAA berth en route to being named the WAC Coach of the Year. McKinney guided Rice to the only two NCAA appearances in school history during her tenure. Rice went 22-10 and won its first WAC Tournament crown in 2000 making its first NCAA appearance. McKinney coached two players that season that were drafted by the WNBA, marking another school first. In 2004, McKinney led Rice to the finals of the WAC Tournament and the second round of the WNIT. McKinney directed the Owls to a win over No. 6 Louisiana Tech in 2002, marking the highest ranked opponent Rice has ever beaten. She led Rice to the WNIT four times during her 12 years there.

McKinney was the head coach at NAIA Montevallo in 1985 and 1986, compiling a 27-28 record there. McKinney was named District Coach of the Year following her second season at Montevallo ... Began her coaching career at Western Kentucky, where she was an assistant for two years before leaving for Montevallo. She returned to Western Kentucky after her stint at Montevallo and was an assistant there for another seven years before taking over at Rice.

McKinney played for NC State from 1976-79, scoring 1,359 points and pulling down more than 600 rebounds.

    Talking Tigers

    Senior Guard
    Tasha Taylor
Head Coach Cristy McKinney will be anxious to see how senior Tasha Taylor and freshman Bryelle Smith recover from knee injuries that sidelined the guards last season. Taylor is a three-year starter, while Smith suffered the injury in her first career game as a Tiger.

Junior Lele Hardy holds the Clemson record for steals per game with a 2.97 career average. She set a school record with 98 as a freshman and has totaled 181 in her two seasons. The figure ranks seventh all-time and Hardy is likely to climb into the top five during the 2008-09 season.

The Tigers’ roster will be dominated by youth. Tasha Taylor, the team’s lone senior, joins four juniors for just five upperclassmen. Four players will be in their second seasons, and five newcomers and redshirt freshman Bryelle Smith then round out the squad.

    Sophomore Guard
    Sthefany Thomas
Sthefany Thomas played with the Argentinean national team in the summer of 2008 in their effort to play in the Olympic Games. The Argentineans finished second in the South American Championships in June to advance to the Olympic qualifier in Spain. Thomas averaged 12.3 points during the Championships, which included a 22-point performance in a win of Chili. Thomas’ mother is from Argentina and she lived in the country for several years before moving to the United States.

When the Clemson team travels to Seattle for a Thanksgiving tournament, it will be the first time in history that the Tigers have played a game in the state of Washington. However, it will be one of very few times that Clemson travels outside of South Carolina for a non-conference game in 2008-09. The Tigers’ only other non-conference games are at Furman, South Carolina, Western Carolina and Georgia.

The Tigers will have a new face in the coaching ranks in 2008-09 as A.G. Hall joined the Clemson staff in the off-season. A former letterwinner at North Carolina Central, Hall returns to the southeast following a six-year stint at Providence College.
