UNC Freshman Wrestlers Recognized By Amateur Wrestling News

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina freshmen wrestlers Skyler Holman and Nick Richmond were both honored in the latest issue of Amateur Wrestling News (AWN) magazine as members of its 2000 All-Rookie Team.

Holman, a Sallisaw, Okla., native, was named first-team All-Rookie at 125 pounds by AWN after leading Carolina with 34 wins in 38 bouts. Holman was 12-1 in dual meets with six wins by fall and he was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Holman pinned Virginia's Steve Garland in the ACC championship match to take his first conference title. He was 1-2 in the NCAA Tournament and he finished the year ranked No. 6 in the nation in his weight class by Intermat.

Nick Richmond earned sixth-team All-Rookie honors after a freshman campaign that saw him go 16-13 as UNC's regular starter at 184 pounds. The Claysville, Pa., finished the 1999-2000 season by placing third at the 2000 ACC Tournament. He started his first season in Chapel Hill with a third-place showing at the East Stroudsburg Open and a second-place finish at the Carolina Open.
