Hoang Eliminated From NCAA Wrestling Championship Despite Strong Showing
Duke University senior Tommy Hoang (Cushing, Okla.) had his season and career come to a close on Friday in Kansas City, Missouri at the 2003 NCAA Wrestling Championship. Hoang, a 125-pounder, finishes the year 18-8 with a team best six wins by fall. He is just the third three-time NCAA qualifier in Duke history and ranks sixth all-time with 88 career wins.
Hoang posted a 1-1 record on the opening day of the 2003 NCAA Wrestling Championship in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday, opening the day with a 12-4 major decision over Oregon State's Michael Delaney to advance to a second round match with third-seed Ben VomBaur (Boise State). In the second round, VomBaur topped Hoang with an 8-5 decision to move on to the quarterfinals.
On Friday, Hoang dropped a 10-5 decision to Minnesota's Bobbe Lowe in the consolation bracket. The Cushing, Okla. native closes his career with a 3-6 record in three NCAA trips, including a pin (4:05) of Marlon Felton of Northern Illinois last season and an upset of fourth-seeded Jason Powell (Nebraska) in 2001. Hoang is just the third three-time NCAA wrestling qualifier at Duke, joining Joel Puleo (1973-75) and Chris Heckel (1995, 1997-98).
