Tar Heels Wrestlers Finish 30th at NCAAs
Brad Byers, Matt Kenny Make Strong Showings

ST. LOUIS -- Sophomores Brad Byers and Matt Kenny helped lead the University of North Carolina to a 30th place finish at the 2000 NCAA Wrestling Championships last weekend at the Kiel Center in St. Louis, Mo. It was Carolina's best finish at nationals since placing 24th as a team in 1997. Carolina was 32nd each of the last two years.

Five Tar Heels represented UNC in St. Louis, including Skyler Holman (125), Byers (133), Corey Bell (174), Clint Osborn (197) and Matt Kenny (Hwt.). Byers and Kenny had excellent performances over the weekend, as but both fell just one match shy of earning All-America honors. It was the second consecutive year two Tar Heels were just a match shy of becoming All-Americas. Last year, Chuckie Connor and Kenny held that distinction.

Byers scored upsets of ninth-seeded Zach Zimmerer of Stanford, and eighth-seeded Paris Ruiz of Fresno State before falling to eventual national champion Eric Juergens of Iowa in the championship bracket. In the consolation bracket, Byers dropped a 12-4 major decision to Rob Loper (Pittsburgh) in his bid to become Carolina's first All-America since 1997.

In the heavyweight division, Kenny posted wins over 10th seeded Sean Hage (West Virginia) and John Testa (Clarion) but fell to the No. 9 seed, Tim Courtad of Ohio, in his bid to earn All-America status. He finished the tournament 3-2.

Holman finished 1-2 in his first NCAA Tournament, while Bell was 2-2 for the second year in a row at nationals. Osborn was 0-2 in his NCAA debut.
