Twenty-six ACC wrestlers To compete In NCAA Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A total of 26 student-athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference will compete in the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which are set for March 17-19 at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Arena. Six ACC wrestlers were awarded at-large berths to the tournament on Wednesday. They will join the 20 wrestlers who earned automatic berths via their performances in last Saturday’s ACC Championship at Charlottesville, Va. The at-large group includes three Virginia Tech wrestlers – Chris Diaz at 141 pounds, Brian Stephens at 149 and David Marone at 285. Virginia 133-pounder Joe Spisak was also selected, as was the Cavaliers’ 285-pounder Jack Danilkowicz. North Carolina’s Thomas Scotton earned a spot in the 165-pound field. This marks the third consecutive year that the ACC has placed at least 25 wrestlers in the NCAA field. The NCAA announced a total of 50 at-large selections for the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Wednesday. The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria without priority order: head-to-head competition, qualifying event placement, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking and number of matches contested at that weight class.
