York And Adams Named Student-Athletes Of The Week

March 8, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Wrestler Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) and women's lacrosse player Jen Adams (Marino, South Australia), have been named student-athletes of the week by the Maryland Department of Athletics for the week March 6-10.

York, a sophomore, defended his ACC title last weekend with a 4-2 win over North Carolina's Brad Byers in a rematch of last year's ACC championships. York, who wrestled at the 133-pound weight class, held on to a 2-1 advantage for most of the match. However with 10 seconds left, York put the No. 1 seed Byers on his back and won the match, 6-1. Earlier in the day, he defeated No. 2 seed Lee Carroll of NC State, 4-3. York is one of four Maryland wrestlers who advanced to the NCAA tournament, which will be held March 16.

This season York has dominated his opponents, as reflected in his overall record of 34-6. He boasts a dual record of 7-1, and has been one of the most consistent wrestlers in the ACC. York began the season with a 10-match win streak, from Nov. 20 to Dec. 29. Additionally, he was ranked No. 17 in the 133-pound division of the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll in early December. In his two-year career, York boasts an impressive record of 58-12.

Adams led the way for the No. 1 Terps last weekend, netting three goals against Duke on Saturday and again scoring three goals against North Carolina on Sunday. She tallied five points against No. 2 Duke, including scoring the first goal of the season for the Terps. On Sunday, Adams scored the first goal in the first overtime period against No. 5 North Carolina.

Adams returns this season with a long list of accomplishments. She was named Player of the Year for 1999 by College Lacrosse USA, e-lacrosse, the ECAC and Brine/IWLCA. Adams was named the NCAA and ACC tournament MVP, and received the ACC player of the week honors four times last season. She has been selected to the 2000 pre-season first-team All-American squads by College Lacrosse USA, Inside Lacrosse, and Lax Power.

This week marks the second time York has received student-athlete of the week honors, and the first time for Adams. York is a letters and sciences major, and Adams is majoring in communications.
