They're In! York, Booth, Weidman and Mansueto Head To Nationals
March 5, 2000 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Brandon York defended hi ACC championship at 133-pounds on March 4 in Cole Field House by defeating North Carolina's Brad Byers for teh second straight year. With the win, York is poised to become the first Maryland wrestler to win four conference titles in his career. On March 16, York and three other Terps--who are all only sophomores and include Josh Weidman, Mark Mansueto and Rob Booth--will travel to the NCAA Tournament in St. Louis, Mo. for the three day event. York was the lone Maryland qualifier last year and was knocked out in the first round. The Terps' four qualifiers mark the most Maryland wrestlers to compete in the NCAA Tournament since 1996, when the school finished No. 29 nationally after having five Terps make the trip to Cedar Falls, Iowa. That year, 134-pound senior Jim "The Guzzler" Guzzio finished fifth to earn All-American honors and the highest Maryland finish since current assistant coach Tom Miller, at 142 pounds, took third in 1992. Shane Mack, Jeff Whalen, Arash Alizadeh and Damon Stephens also qualifed but fell short in the first round. At 141, Mark Mansueto went undefeated during the ACC regular season and led the Terps with 10 dual wins. He reached the finals of the conference tournament by defeating NC State's Oraefo Brown, but needed more time against No. 4 seed P.J. Bory from Virginia, who upset his way to the title by beating Mansueto, 6-4. At 157, Rob Booth was Maryland's guttiest wrestler at the ACC tournament, pinning Duke's Geoff Anderson at 4:21 in the first round and then decisioning Virginia's Don Carlo-Clauss in the semifinals. Booth had previously lost to Carlo-Clauss twice during the regular season. He faced the Wolfpack's Scott Garren in the finals and fell, 10-2. Josh Weidman at 165, is Maryland's hottest wrestler heading into the nationals. Before losing in the ACC finals to NC State's Joel Dramis, Weidman had won 10 straight matches dating back to Feb. 6. UMTerps.com will have complete coverage of the Terps' trip to the Nationals.
