GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke 133-pound freshman Brandon Gambucci and NC State 157-pound senior Colton Palmer have been named the final Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestlers of the Week for the 2011-2012 season after each closed out unbeaten weekends that included wins by fall vs. league opponents.
Gambucci led the Blue Devils over the weekend with a 3-0 record to improve to 21-9 overall on the year. His 21 wins are tied for the team lead this season. Against NC State, the redshirt freshman needed just 3:32 to earn his third pin of the season over the Wolfpack’s Ben Elliott. Against Ohio’s Andrew Hammer that same evening, Gambucci posted a convincing 10-5 decision for his 20th victory. The Mansfield, Ohio, native completed the weekend with a hard-fought 8-6 decision over Brett Boston of Appalachian State. Gambucci is 6-4 overall in duals and 1-3 in ACC competition this season.
Palmer picked up two wins this weekend for the Wolfpack. In his first match on Friday he defeated Immanuel Kerr- Brown of Duke by pin sealing the victory for NC State. The format of the match was set up so that his bout at 157 was the last bout of the match, and Palmer rose to the occasion with a pin in 3:56 to seal a 24-15 win. The Durham, N.C., native then decisioned Harrison Hightower of Ohio in his second match, 5-3. Palmer has now won four straight matches and has recorded three pins in those matches.
Conference teams have now completed their regular seasons and are gearing up for the 2012 ACC Championship, which will be held Saturday, March 3 at the University of North Carolina’s Carmichael Arena.
