CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Blue Devil wrestling squad opened up the 2007-08 season with several dominating performances at The Citadel Open on Sunday. Nine of Duke's 13 wrestlers placed in the top four in the meet designed to give some early season experience to underclassmen. Freshman Willy Mello won the 165-pound division and redshirt sophomore Ben Wales was victorious at 174 pounds.
Starting off for Duke at 141 pounds was sophomore Spencer Jasper, who is moving up a weight class this year from 133 pounds. Jasper won his first three matches, including two consecutive pins to start his day, on the way to placing second.
At 149 pounds, freshman Mike Bell battled back from a second round loss to the top seed to win three matches in wrestlebacks and place fourth at the meet. Freshman Colby Johnson also looked impressive, winning two matches before bowing out to Bell in wrestlebacks.
