North Carolina Captures 2005 ACC Wrestling Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The North Carolina Tar Heels captured the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship on Saturday at the 2005 Mat Jam hosted by the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. The Tar Heels tallied 76 points en route to four individual titles at 125, 133, 165 and 197 pounds to register their 16th overall league title and sixth championship in the last 10 seasons. Virginia Tech finished second with 66.5 points, followed in third place by NC State with 56.5 points. Virginia placed fourth with 53 points, while Duke (47.5) and Maryland (21) finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively. North Carolina's Evan Sola was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament. Sola won the individual title at 133 pounds downing the No. 2 seeded David Hoffman of Virginia Tech, 6-4 in the championship final. Sola collected a pair of major decision victories in the first and semifinal rounds to advance to the championship match.
