LEXINGTON, Va. - The University of Virginia wrestling team scored 61 points as the Cavaliers finished third at the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships at Mat Jam 2006 held at the Virginia Military Institute Saturday. Drew DiPasquale at 149 pounds, Damian Johnson at 165 pounds, Mike Grogan at 174 pounds and Kyle Narkiewicz at 184 pounds all finished as ACC runner-ups in their weight classes.

North Carolina won the 2006 ACC Championships by recording 90.5 points. NC State edged Virginia for second place with 64 points while Maryland was fourth with 48 points. Virginia Tech took fifth place with 44.5 points and Duke was sixth.

DiPasquale, the fifth seed, advanced to the championship final after picking up a 7-4 sudden victory over Duke's Daniel Shvartsman. DiPasquale then upset No. 2 seed Joe Caramanica of NC State by pinning him at 8:54. No. 1 seed Andrew Schlaffer earned a 10-4 decision over DiPasquale to capture the 149-pound ACC title.

Johnson, who earned the No. 1 seed at 165 pounds, was upset by No. 2 seed UNC's Garrett Atkinson, 5-1, in the finals. Johnson picked up an 11-2 major decision over NC State's Obie Simpson to advance to the championship.

Grogan, the No. 3 seed, defeated Maryland's Mike Maceroli, 4-2, and Virginia Tech's Steve Ratley, 5-0, to advance to the finals. He fell to No. 1 seed Alex Maciag of North Carolina, 16-5.

Narkiewicz, who also earned a No. 3 seed, had a 13-5 major decision over Duke's Dan Fox, before upsetting No. 2 seed Justin Dobies of North Carolina with a 3-1 sudden victory to advance to the finals. Maryland's top-seed Jeremy Colbert then edged Narkiewicz, 5-4, to capture the 184-pound title.

Two Cavaliers captured third place as Nick Smith won 5-2 over NC State's Jainor Palma at heavyweight and Eric Albright, who also earned a top-seed, defeated NC State's Garrett Cummings, 7-3.

Nick Alparone at 141 pounds, Mike Sewell at 157 pounds and Brent Jones at 197 pounds all finished fourth for the Cavaliers.
