Virginia's Greg Francesca and Jimi Massey Finish as ACC Champions at the 2000-2001 ACC Wrestling Championship

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.. - The University of Virginia wrestling team finished second as a team with 73 points in the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships at Carmichael Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina. UVa's Greg Francesca (Union, N.J./Blair Academy) and Jimi Massy (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) each won their respective weight classes and were named ACC Champions for their performances. Francesca finished 2-0 and defeated Duke's Tim Marcantonio by the score of 7-5 in the 165 lbs. finals, while Massey went 2-0 and earned a 9-6 decision over Maryland's Jake Stork in the 184 lbs. finals. N.C. State (78.5 team points) won the ACC Wrestling Championships and North Carolina's JohnMark Bentley was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.. Virginia's trio of Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional), Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) and Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) each finished runner-up in their respective weight classes. Alexander (133 lbs.), Carlo-Clauss (157 lbs.) and Etu (Heavyweight) each went 2-1 to record second place. The Cavaliers' P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern), Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) each finished third in their weight classes. Bory (149 lbs) and Seidel (141 lbs.) both finished 2-1, while Muir (174 lbs.) turned in a 1-1 mark to earn third place. The ACC Tournament was part of the 2001 Mat Jam, which also featured the conference tournaments for the Colonial Athletic Association and the Southern Conference wrestling championships. With their first place finishes in the ACC Wrestling Championships, Francesca and Massey will now advance to the 2000-2001 NCAA Wrestling Championships which will be held on March 15-17 in Iowa City, Iowa. The competition will take place at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena (15,500) on the campus of the University of Iowa. Other at-large bids to compete in the NCAA event will be announced later this week.
