Sunday, Feb 22 Maryland Wrestling Closes Regular Season with 25-15 Victory Over Virginia Eleventh-ranked Steven Bell won his match at 133 pounds by forfeit, and No. 9 Alex Krom took an 11-2 major decision to give Maryland an early 10-0 lead. After senior Steve Fehnel, who was honored in Senior Day ceremonies before the dual, lost his match, Kyle John took on Jedd Moore in the 157 pound contest. John and Moore fought the match of the day, with both grapplers fighting for every advantage. As the crowd got more and more into the tightly-contested battle, John gained an upper hand late in the contest and looked close to earning a two-point takedown which would have given him a lead.
Saturday, Feb 21 Maryland Wrestling Shuts Down George Mason, 32-10 The Maryland wrestling team opened its dual against George Mason with falls in two of the first three matches on its way to a 32-10 victory over the Patriots at the Comcast Center on Saturday. Eleventh-ranked Steven Bell, ninth-ranked Alex Krom and Patrick Gilmore each registered falls en route to the victory. Brendan Byrne got the Terps off to a good start when he held on for a 7-6 victory at 125, putting the team up 3-0. Following that, No. 11 Steven Bell made quick work of Denny Herndon, pinning him just 2:10 into the first round. Next up, No. 9 Alex Krom was out to a commanding lead at 141, eventually pinning Mason's Ryan Watson with 45 seconds remaining in the match. Duke Wrestling Sends Seniors Out In Style; Defeat Campbell 26-14 Seven Duke University wrestling seniors closed out their regular season careers with an exciting 26-14 win over visiting Campbell University tonight in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The win is the 10th for the Blue Devils this season. Duke captured its second victory over the Camels this season as Campbell dropped to 8-9 overall. The Blue Devils close out the regular season 10-5 overall and travel to the ACC Tournament on March 7. The match started at 125 pounds with rookie Peter Terrezza going up against C.J. Gittens. Looking for his 22nd win of the season, Terrezza got out in front early with a two-point takedown in the opening seconds of the first period and add two more points in the final minute for a 4-2 lead after three minutes. Old Dominion Pins NC State Wrestling, 30-9 RALEIGH, N.C. – Old Dominion won seven matches, three of them by fall, and defeated NC State 30-9 in a dual match Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum. The win lifted the 20th-ranked Monarchs to 17-6 in dual matches this season. The Wolfpack fell to 4-15-1. The Wolfpack’s Darrion Caldwell, ranked third nationally at 149, picked up a deceptively easy 8-3 decision over Joley Metzler to cut the ODU team lead to 9-6. Caldwell improved to 30-1 with the victory, making him just the second wrestler in NC State history to win 30 or more matches in a season more than once. Heavyweight Sylvester Terkay won 30 or more in 1991, 1992 and 1993.
