Maryland Wrestlers' Rally Falls Short At George Mason
January 29, 1999 FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason won four of the first five matches and held off a Maryland rally for a 24-13 victory in a non-conference college wrestling dual meet before a crowd of 661 Thursday night at the John Linn Memorial Gymnasium. Opening at 174 pounds due to a new rule requiring a random draw to determine at which weight class the meet begins, Maryland gained the early advantage as Chad Masemer won an 8-4 decision. George Mason won the next four matches, however, for an 18-3 lead. Neil Johnson scored a 6-2 decision at 184, Keith Sholders took a 6-4 decision in overtime at 197, Brent Lancaster won by fall in 2:03 at heavyweight and Steven Daggett won by fall in 4:00. After an intermission break, Maryland rallied to win the next two matches as Brandon York scored a 16-5 major decision at 133 and Bryan Robinovitz won a 12-6 decision at 141 to close the margin to 18-10, but Patriot Jason Grant broke through with a 7-4 decision at 149. Terrapin Jake Stork won a 9-3 decision at 157 before George Mason's Mark Weader closed the meet with an 8-5 victory at 165. Maryland (3-2, 1-0 in the ACC) travels to Chapel Hill to meet North Carolina Saturday at 2 p.m.
