COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team started off quickly against North Carolina State and held on to defeat the Wolfpack 22-15 at Ritchie Coliseum. Junior heavyweight Paul Fitzmaurice (New Carrollton, Md./DeMatha) sealed the victory with a pin 33 seconds into the deciding final match.

Sophomore Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and redshirt freshman Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) won the first two matches of the evening for Maryland. At 125 pounds, Guzzio defeated 16th-ranked Lee Carroll in a very technical showdown. The pair had wrestled two previous times, each with Carroll coming out on top. York, the ACC Wrestler of the Week at 133 pounds on Jan. 13, improved his career record to 15-1 with a thrilling 5-3 overtime triumph against State's Greg Bauer.

In the middle weight classes, senior captain Ted Harlan (Glenmore, Pa./Haverford Prep), at 149, and freshman Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md/Bishop Curley), at 165, had critical wins. Harlan remains perfect in dual matches this season with a 4-0 record and Aquia posted his first career dual win.

At 197, experienced junior Mike Tomaino (Allenhurst, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) gave Maryland a one-point lead heading into the final match with a 3-2 win over Josh McClure. With the crowd on their feet, the heavyweights came to the mat to decide the match. After remaining neutral for the first few seconds, Fitzmaurice suddenly flipped his opponent onto his back and pinned him for the victory.

The Terps move to 3-1 on the year and 1-0 in the ACC, as the Wolfpack fall to 3-5, 0-2 in the ACC. Next, the Terps face George Mason in Fairfax, Va. on Jan. 28, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
