CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team won eight of 10 individual bouts and defeated Virginia, 32-6, Friday night in Atlantic Coast Conference action at Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels picked up two wins by fall and two by major decision to win the match going away.

As the result of a random draw, the 141-pound match was the first of the night, and UNC sophomore Josh Cowley set the tone early when he took down P.J. Bory with 0:01 left in the third and final period to record a 6-4 win at 141 lbs.

Fellow Tar Heel sophomore JohnMark Bentley, ranked ninth in the nation at 149 lbs., followed Cowley's win with a workmanlike, 6-2 decision of his own over John Pozniak. True freshman Pat Cadwallader then recorded a 4-3 win over Greg Francesca at 157 lbs. to give Carolina a 9-0 lead.

Virginia's two-time defending ACC champion Jim Harshaw got the Cavalliers on the board with a 4-0 decision over Dan Calhoun at 165 that cut the lead to 9-3.

At 174 lbs. UNC's Jamie Groudle broke the match open when he recorded his first win by fall of the season, pinning John Qualter in 2:14 to give Carolina a 15-3 advantage. Corey Bell followed that with a 10-1, major-decision victory over Ryan McGrath at 184 lbs. for a 19-3 Tar Heel bulge.

After Virginia's Craig Fenstermaker decisioned Ty Roofner, 3-0, at 197 lbs., UNC's true freshman heavyweight, Matt Kenny, recorded a 15-5 major decision win for a 23-6 Carolina lead. Tar Heel All-America candidate Chuckie Connor, currently ranked fifth in the nation at 125 lbs., decisioned Matt Roth, 2-0, for a 26-6 lead, and Brad Byers finished out the scoring for Carolina with a pin of Mike Pacillo in 5:43 at 133 lbs.

The Tar Heels travelled Friday night to Charleston, S.C., where they will face The Citadel and Anderson College Saturday afternoon in a double-dual.
