UNC Picks Up Win In First ACC Match

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The UNC Tar Heels improved to 5-6 in dual meets with a 19-15 victory over Maryland in their first ACC match.

Carolina won six of the 10 weight classes in Sunday's match, led by 17th ranked Keegan Mueller's win in the 165 pound weight class. Mueller improved to 23-6 with the win.

Justin Dobies recorded the Tar Heels' first victory of the match over Patrick Gilmore, improving to 17-7 overall. Maryland then followed with three straight wins to take a 12-3 lead going into middleweights.

    NC State Wrestling Pinned 31-6 at No. 18 Hofstra

    HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Sophomore Ryan Patrovich recorded a tech fall and freshmen Steve Bonanno and Ben Clymer posted major decisions to lead 18th-ranked Hofstra to a 31-6 victory over NC State in college wrestling action Sunday at the David S. Mack Sports Complex. The Pride improved to 4-1 on the year in dual matches, while the Wolfpack slipped to 3-5.

    Hokies conclude perfect day at Bulldog Duals

    BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Virginia Tech wrestling team moved to 9-0 on the young season with three dual meet wins Saturday at the Bulldog Duals. The Hokies opened up with a 39-3 win over host Gardner-Webb and then beat The Citadel 28-9 and Davidson 34-11 to end the day.

    Tech opened up the day with nine individual wins over Gardner-Webb. The matched started at 125 pounds, where Schuyler Swanton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period and eventually downed Cortney Roberts 6-2. Will Livingston dominated at 133 pounds, picking up a 19-4 technical fall in the third period. The transfer used seven takedowns, an escape and two near falls to cruise to the easy win. At 149 pounds, Scott Chené rode out Kurt Wentink the whole third period to pick up a 2-0 decision. Matt Rosen got a reversal with less than 10 seconds left in the match to pick up a 5-3 decision and make it 14-0, Tech.

    Tar Heels Edged By American

    Washington - Despite four individual victories for the Carolina wrestling team, a forfeit at 149 pounds helped The American University Eagles capture a 25-19 victory over the Tar Heels in a dual meet Saturday. Carolina fell to 4-6 in dual meets with the loss.

    No. 17-ranked Keegan Mueller opened the evening with a technical fall over American's Patrick Graham. Mueller outscored Graham 17-0 to improve to 8-3 in dual meets. The Dallas native is now 22-6 overall.

    Virginia Wrestling Drops 19-15 Decision to No. 24 Kent State

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team lost a narrow 19-15 decision to No. 24 Kent State Saturday morning at the Virginia Duals in Hampton. The Cavaliers wrap up the duals with a 1-2 record after defeating Clarion (28-9) and falling to Navy (20-15) on Friday.

    Matt Bonson (Fr., Lewistown, Pa.), 10th-ranked Chris Henrich (So., Lansdale, Pa.) and 19th-ranked Brent Jones (Jr., Burke, Va.) each won for the Cavaliers to finish 3-0 at the Virginia Duals. Bonson recorded an upset of 11th-ranked Dan Mitcheff at 133 pounds, while Nick Nelson (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) followed with a victory over No. 13 Drew Lashaway at 141 pounds.

    Virginia (5-6) won five of the nine contested bouts, but again started in a 6-0 hole after forfeiting the 125-pound class because of injuries to Ross Gitomer (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) and Joe Trause (Fr., Carlstadt, N.J.). The match was tight throughout, as eight of the nine bouts were decided by decisions, including five by three points or fewer.

    Virginia Wrestling Splits Friday Matches at Virginia Duals

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team split its two matches Friday at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, dropping its opener to Navy, 20-15, before rebounding for a 28-9 triumph over Clarion. Virginia (5-5) next will face No. 24 Kent State at 10 a.m. Saturday.

    Matt Bonson (Fr., Lewistown, Pa.), 10th-ranked Chris Henrich (So., Lansdale, Pa.) and 19th-ranked Brent Jones (Jr., Burke, Va.) each scored two wins for the Cavaliers at 133, 174 and 197 pounds, respectively. The three also had a pin apiece.
