ACC Releases 50th Anniversary Men's Tennis Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Men's Tennis Team was announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. The 51-member team was voted on by the nine league institutions as decided by the league's 50th Anniversary Committee.

Clemson led all league schools with 15 members on the Golden Anniversary team while Duke and North Carolina tied for second with 11 honorees each. NC State had four players selected followed by Georgia Tech with three. Maryland, Virginia, and Wake Forest each had two players selected followed by South Carolina with one.

The ACC's 50th Anniversary Men's Tennis team, in alphabetical order, is as follows:

Gilles Ameline, Wake Forest (1989-1990)
All-American singles ... 30-10 singles record senior year, ranked 16th by ITA ... Two-time All-ACC selection ... Career singles record of 58-24 in two years ... Tied for first on season singles victories with 30.

Andy Andrews, NC State (1978-1981)

Billy Brock, North Carolina (1973-1976)
Coach Don Skakle protege ... was a member of four ACC Championship teams at Carolina and was an All-American in singles in 1976 ... a member of North Carolina teams that lost only eight dual matches in his four-year career, including four undefeated seasons in the ACC ... won two ACC individual flight singles titles, at #3 in 1974 and #1 in 1975 ... took home a doubles title in 1975 with partner Tommy Dixon.

David Caldwell, North Carolina (1993-1996)
The only ACC men's tennis player to earn ACC Player of the Year honors three times, in 1994, 95 and 96 ... named an ITA All-American in singles as both a sophomore and a junior, and was a doubles All-American with partner Brint Morrow as a junior ... was 16-0 in ACC singles as a junior and a senior, and is the only player to ever win three individual ACC flight titles at #1 singles ... Palmer and Johnson competed for the U.S. in Davis Cup play against India in Winston-Salem, N.C. ... Bryan Jones, North Carolina (1989-1992)

He became known as much for his quiet on-the-court manner as for his tennis talent ... A team captain, McKee and doubles partner Freddie McNair reached the NCAA doubles finals in 1973, and the two won the 1971 and 72 ACC doubles titles ... In singles, McKee won two ACC titles, at #4 in 1971 and #3 in 1972.

Freddie McNair, North Carolina (1970-1973)
The only Carolina player to win All-America honors throughout his four years in Chapel Hill ... Freddie McNair probably ranks as Carolina's finest player behind Vic Seixas ... McNair combined with Richie McKee to reach the NCAA doubles finals in 1973 ... In the ACC, he won three individual singles titles in 1970, 71 and 72 and three doubles titles, one with Joe Dorn in 1970 and two with McKee in 1971 and 72 ... he attained the world's #1 doubles ranking with teammate Sherwood Stewart in the late 1970s.

Huntley Montgomery, Virginia (1997-2000)

George Sokol, North Carolina (1962-1964)
All-American in singles as a junior in 1963 ... He was the Tar Heels' first dominant presence in the ACC, which began selecting a singles champion in 1954. From 1954 to 1964, the ACC chose a sole singles champion before going to individual flight titles thereafter ... Sokol won three of those titles, in 1962, 63 and 64 ... Sokol also won an outright ACC doubles title in 1963, with partner Keith Stoneman.

Mitch Sprengelmeyer, Clemson (1994-1997)
All-American in singles in 1997 ... All-American in doubles in 1996 and 97 ... ACC Champion at No. 4 Singles ... 1997 ACC Player-of-the-Year ... 1995 and 96 ACC Champion at No. 1 doubles ...
