Men's Tennis Announces 2003-04 Schedule
July 22, 2003 CHARLOTTESVILLE - The University of Virginia men's tennis team has announced its 2003-04 schedule. The fall season consists of seven individual tournaments, including the UVa Invitational in September, while the spring season consists of 20 dual matches, including 16 against teams ranked at the end of last season. "I think this schedule will certainly challenge our team and we look forward to playing some of the nation's finest programs," said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. The 2003 fall schedules opens with the UVa Invitational in September at the Snyder Tennis Center. The event will feature the Cavaliers along with seven other schools, including Alabama, Wake Forest, Harvard, Purdue, and William & Mary, who were all ranked at the end of last season. Three ITA championships and three futures events will comprise the remainder of the Cavaliers' fall schedule. The 2004 spring schedule opens with the ACC Coaches' Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem before beginning the dual match season. Virginia will play 20 dual matches, 16 against teams ranked at the end of the 2003 season, with a chance to play more at events like the National Team Indoor Championships, the ACC Championships, and the NCAA Championships. Highlighting the dual match season is a three-match January road trip to open the season against perennial powers Minnesota, Northwestern, and Tennessee. In February, the Cavaliers travel again to Big Ten country to play 2003 NCAA Champion Illinois and Indiana. Virginia's home schedule will consist of two home matches in February at Boar's Head Sports Club and eight in March and April at the Snyder Tennis Center. Defending ACC Champion Duke headlines five ACC home matches as the Cavaliers will also host Florida State, Wake Forest, North Carolina, and NC State. Texas and TCU, both ranked in the top 25 at the end of last season, headline the non-conference home schedule at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers are coming off a 20-8 campaign in 2003 in which they finished fifth in the ACC with a 4-4 mark and were ranked No. 47 at season's end. Virginia will have 11 returning lettermen from that team on this season's roster along with two incoming freshmen who are expected to make an impact this season.
