2006 All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team Announced
June 27, 2006 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Six All-Americans and seven All-Atlantic Coast Conference performers highlight the inaugural All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team, as announced Tuesday by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
ACC champion Duke placed a league-high six members on the team, including All-Americans Ludovic Walter (singles), Joey Atas (doubles) and Jonathan Stokke (doubles). NCAA quarterfinalist Virginia and North Carolina, which reached the NCAA round of 16, each placed three student-athletes on the squad. Doubles All-American Nick Meythaler headlines the Cavalier group, while ITA National Senior Player of the Year and singles and doubles All-American Raian Luchici leads the way for the Tar Heels.
Clemson, Miami and Virginia Tech each had two student-athletes named to the squad, while NC State and Wake Forest had one apiece.
Miami freshman Daniel Vallverdu, the ACC Freshman of the Year and a doubles All-American, earned a spot on the team, as did Arvid Puranen of Virginia Tech, who earned an at-large spot in the NCAA singles competition. All-ACC selections Peter Rodrigues of Duke and Doug Stewart of Virginia were also named to the All-Academic Team.
