Men's Tennis Players Huntley Montgomery And Brian Vahaly Are Top-Ranked Division I Doubles Team
June 4, 2001 CHARLOTTESVILLE - University of Virginia tennis players Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) are the top-ranked Division I doubles team in the nation in the final WingspanBank.com Men's Collegiate Tennis Rankings for the 2000-01 season. In addition, Vahaly is ranked fifth in singles and Virginia is ranked 39th in the final team rankings. The rankings are administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Montgomery and Vahaly are members of the 2001 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I All-America Team. They recently completed their intercollegiate careers at the NCAA Championships. Montgomery and Vahaly compiled an overall record of 34-8 in doubles competition during the 2000-01 season. They advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship before losing to Johan Brunstrom and Jon Wallmark of Southern Methodist University 6-1, 6-4. Montgomery and Vahaly were the top-seeded doubles team in the NCAA Championships and advanced further than any doubles team in UVa history. Vahaly earned All-America honors for the third time after compiling an overall singles record of 40-6 during the 2000-01 season, advancing to the finals of the NCAA Singles Championship and teaming with Montgomery for an outstanding doubles season. His 40 singles victories are a UVa single-season record and he advanced further in the NCAA Singles Championship than any player in UVa history. Vahaly, who was unseeded entering the NCAA singles competition, lost to third-seeded Matias Boeker of Georgia 6-2, 6-4 in the finals. Vahaly was the ACC Player of the Year and the ACC flight champion at #1 singles each of the last two seasons. He earned All-ACC honors four times.
Virginia finished the season with a team record of 14-8 and participated in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year. The Cavaliers lost to the University of Southern California in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
