Duke Foursome Earns Singles Wins At NCAA Men's Tennis Championships
May 24, 2001 ATHENS, GA. -- Marko Cerenko, Phillip King, Andres Pedroso and Ramsey Smith of Duke each earned singles wins on Thursday in the opening round of the 2001 NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Championships in Athens, Ga. King knocked off SMU's Jon Wallmark, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and will meet Jason Marshall of Purdue on Friday while Smith downed New Mexico's Takeshi Itoh, 6-4, 6-1, advancing to face the winner of Phil Metz of Ohio State and Georgia's Chad Carlson. Pedroso picked up a straight set victory over Miami's Michael Lang and will play the winner of Lesley Joseph of Georgia and Andrew Park of Southern California. Cerenko used three sets to defeat Julien Raynal of South Alabama, and will take on Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA on Friday. Also on Friday, Duke doubles team of King and Smith will open the tournament against Marco Baron and Chris McDonald of Mississippi State.
