Duke Set To Host NCAA Men's Tennis Regional
May 10, 2002 Duke University will play host to an NCAA Men's Tennis Regional on Saturday and Sunday, May 11-12, at the Ambler Tennis Stadium on campus. The Blue Devils, ranked 17th nationally, open with 75th-ranked American at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Tenth-ranked California then meets UMBC at 1:00 p.m. The winners will face each other on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Duke is led by ACC Player of the Year Phillip King, who is ranked 11th nationally in singles play. King teams with Michael Yani to form the 28th-ranked doubles tandem. The Blue Devils stand at 15-11 on the season. American brings a 19-1 overall record into postseason play and earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with its Patriot League championship. The Eagles are led by number one singles player Bence Hamon, who is 11-5 on the year in dual match play. California is seeded 10th in the 64-team field and is 18-6 on the season. John Paul Fruttero leads the Bears and is ranked 13th nationally in singles thanks to his 15-6 dual match ledger. UMBC, which received an automatic berth into the field with its Northeast Conference crown, is 18-6 on the season. Top singles player Josef Novotny is 19-3 on the year.
