April 20, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke freshman Henrique Cunha closed the regular season by being named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the third straight time. It marked the sixth time this season the Jau, Brazil, native has won or shared the honor.
Cunha finished the season undefeated in ACC play at the No. 1 spot, winning three matches to go 8-0 in league play. He earned wins over the No. 46, 107 and 27 players in the nation (North Carolina’s Clay Donato, Miami’s Carl Sundberg and Florida State’s Jean-Yves Aubone respectively) to give him an 18-3 record against ranked opponents. Cunha has won 15 straight and is 30-5 overall.
Cunha also tied a school record on Sunday with partner Reid Carleton for most doubles victories in a season (35-5) by a duo. The two went 8-1 in the ACC after a 2-1 week that included wins over the No. 71 and 57 doubles teams. Cunha helped lead the Blue Devils to wins over No. 19 North Carolina and No. 27 Florida State.
The Blue Devils and the other 11 conference teams next see action in the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, which get under way Thursday morning at Cary (N.C.) Tennis Park.
