April 17, 2003
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Five Duke players head up the 18 member 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis All-Conference Team, as selected by a vote of the league's nine head coaches. Also among the honorees are four players from Clemson, three from North Carolina, two from Georgia Tech and Wake Forest and one each from Florida State and Virginia. For the first time in Florida State's 12-year history in the ACC, a Seminole has garnered ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Year honors. Mat Cloer finished the ACC regular-season with a 6-1 league mark for the Noles. The sophomore from Brevard, N.C., is currently No. 45 in the latest ITA rankings and has a 13-6 dual match record this season. Doug Stewart, a native of Malibu, Calif., was named this year's ACC Rookie of the Year, after compiling a 6-2 record in conference play at No. 1 singles for the Virginia Cavaliers. He also compiled a 21-3 dual meet record and stands at No. 41 in the latest ITA rankings. Stewart is the first Cavalier to be named Rookie of the Year since Brian Vahaly earned the distinction in 1998. Duke's Jay Lapidus was accorded ACC Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time in his career. Lapidus led the Blue Devils to a 17-5 overall record and 8-0 conference mark this season. Duke has won nine ACC Titles under Lapidus and enters this weekend's Championship as the No. 1 seed. 2003 ALL-ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE MEN'S TENNIS TEAM
