Weiss Named Assistant Men's Tennis Coach at Tech
March 30, 1999 ATLANTA - Robbie Weiss, the 1988 NCAA singles champion and two-time all-America at Pepperdine, has been named assistant coach for Georgia Techs mens tennis team, head coach Kenny Thorne has announced. Weiss begins his duties at Tech immediately, taking over for Mike Gustafson, who stepped down to enter private business. "Robbie brings a lot to our program," Thorne said. "We were very fortunate to get someone of his stature halfway through the season. He has been successful at all levels of tennis from juniors to college and on to the pros. It will be great for our guys to work with a player of Robbies caliber." After turning professional in 1988, Weiss enjoyed a successful career which included wins against Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Ivan Lendl. In 1990, he won the Philips Open in Sao Paulo City, Brazil. Weiss returned to Pepperdine in January 1997 as an assistant coach for one season while completing his undergraduate degree requirements. He moved to Atlanta in February 1998 and worked for Pinnacle Health Group, a medical consulting firm, for seven months. "Im excited about working with Kenny and the Georgia Tech mens tennis team," Weiss said. "Along with Kenny, I think were a good combination with a lot of collegiate and professional experience. Were looking to elevate the team to a higher level in a short amount of time." During his four-year collegiate career from 1985-88, Weiss compiled a cumulative dual match singles record of 83-24. The 83 wins still ranks second on Pepperdines all-time career victory chart. Weiss became the first Pepperdine player to win an NCAA singles championship in 1988, defeating crosstown rival Brian Garrow of UCLA.
