GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia junior Jarmere Jenkins has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Jenkins, of College Park, Ga., posted straight-set wins over a pair of All-Americans at No. 1 singles to lead the third-ranked Cavaliers to a pair of ACC road wins against the conference’s other two top-20 teams.
Friday’s matchup against sixth-ranked Duke came down to the contest at No. 1 where two of the nation's top seven ranked players battled. Seventh-ranked Jenkins and third-ranked Henrique Cunha held serve every game of the first set before Jenkins won the first set tiebreaker. The second set was tied at 1-1 before Jenkins rolled off five consecutive games to close out the 7-6(4), 6-1 victory and clinch a 4-3 win for Virginia.
In Sunday’s 6-1 win at No. 20 North Carolina, Jenkins dropped just four games in securing a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 34th-ranked Jose Hernandez. The team win was Virginia's 83rd consecutive victory against ACC competition, extending its conference record.
